Sanibel and Captiva Islands
Notecard Box Set

Sanibel and Captiva Islands today are known for shelling and as a nature sanctuary.
The J. N "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge is home today to more than 300 species of birds, 30 types of mammals and 50 species of reptiles and amphibians . These barrier islands have a very rich history. The Calusa Indians were the first residents of the island and their Indian shell burial mounds still remain intact today. Ponce de Leon is believed to have discovered the island in 1513 while looking for the Fountain of Youth. He was shot by an arrow of the Calusa Indians and died in Cuba. It has been said that these beautiful barrier islands have also been home to pirates who have buried treasures there.
