Lighthouses of California Notecard Box SetKnown as the “Graveyard of the Pacific”, construction of lighthouses on the West coast began after the United States obtained the Oregon and California territories in 1846 and 1848 respectively. The influx of immigrants to California during the gold rush in 1848 increased maritime traffic to the coast, reinforcing the need for lighthouse construction. The Lighthouse Board was also established in 1852 to ensure the dependability of the lighthouses in the United States. During the Civil War numerous West coast lighthouses were damaged but not repaired until 1866. The treacherous coastline led to more lighthouses to be built by the 1870’s
Boxes have ten assorted notecards with envelopes.
